Trip Details

Join us for a transformative day in the mountains! Our women’s backcountry ski and splitboard program is designed and guided by women for women and anyone identifying as female or non-binary.

Led by experienced female guides and avalanche professionals, this one-day course introduces you to the fundamentals of backcountry travel — in a welcoming, inclusive, and empowering environment.

What You’ll Learn

We’ll start with the basics:

  • Backcountry ski and splitboard equipment overview
  • Skinning techniques for efficient uphill travel
  • Avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe use for rescue and safety
  • Uphill kick turns and transitions to maximize your time on the descent

No prior touring experience is required — this program is perfect for skiers and riders who have never ventured outside the resort but are ready to explore the backcountry safely and confidently.

Why a Women’s Course

This course was created to foster confidence, connection, and community among women and gender-diverse riders in the backcountry. We know how intimidating it can feel to start something new, especially in a male-dominated space — so we’ve built this program to prioritize support, education, and stoke.

Our goal is to empower more women and non-binary folks to explore, learn avalanche safety, and develop the skills to travel independently in the mountains.

What to Expect

The day begins with an introduction to avalanche awareness and rescue techniques. You’ll learn how to use your beacon, shovel, and probe effectively before heading uphill to practice skinning, track-setting, and efficient movement in real terrain.

Along the way, your guide will help fine-tune your technique and share valuable insights on snow safety, route-finding, and group travel. And of course, we’ll make sure to get plenty of downhill turns along the way!

Join Us This Winter

We run this women’s backcountry ski and splitboard course throughout the winter in Central Oregon, home to some of the best backcountry terrain in the Cascade Range.

If you’ve been dreaming of exploring beyond the lifts, this is your opportunity to learn the skills, build confidence, and find community in the mountains.

Happy guests on the summit of Mt Hood

"I am very happy with my TMG experience. The guides were professional, personable, and extremely concerned about safety. . . I absolutely give highest marks to these guys. If you don't have much Alpine experience, or just want the security of seasoned veterans guiding you up this mountain, then I strongly recommend you sign up with them. Thanks, guys, for a great experience!!"

"What a fantastic experience gaining the summit of a mountain we've gazed on from Portland for 25 years! . . . We learned a great deal, had a ton of fun, felt in very capable hands, and had the reward of summiting on a beautiful clear day. The value of being with a professional, certified, guide and guiding organization was evident throughout. Kudos to the TMG team who were responsive, supportive, and fun to work with every step of the way."

"We booked 2-day overnight program on Mt. Hood with Timberline Mountain Guides. Our guides were great, . . super friendly and reputable. The program did not go as planned due to inclement weather but we still had fun and good experience. The guides were definitely flexible and provided guidance during the trip. I would recommend going with them if it's your first climbing trip on Mt. Hood for sure."

Know Before You Go

No prior backcountry skiing/riding experience is required. We can teach you all the skills you’ll need: skinning, transitioning and group communication.

Prior downhill skiing experience is a must. Off-piste experience is recommended. Untracked snow is one of the great joys of the backcountry – but skiing ungroomed terrain requires technique and experience. Consider getting off the groomed trails, or taking a lesson at your local resort before exploring backcountry skiing and riding.
