We believe that climbing and skiing in the mountains inspires us, exposes us to beautiful natural wonders, and creates bonds between people that transcend daily life. In short, it makes us feel more alive. Timberline Mountain Guides is owned, run and staffed by professional guides who value training and education. Many have achieved American Mountain Guide Association certifications, and all have taken training courses in guiding, avalanche science and wilderness medicine. Our guides are fun, knowledgeable stewards of the land. Together, we lead climbing and skiing experiences throughout Oregon and Washington, and abroad. We instruct technique, movement, technical skills and, of course, lead summit attempts on the classic climbs of the Pacific Northwest.
History
Timberline Mountain Guides, Inc. and Smith Rock Climbing School were originally created in 1983 by Mike Volk. He operated the small company out of his house, right across the street from the world famous Smith Rock State Park. In 1989, Bill Soule became partners with Mike and the two ran the company until Roy Holland took the helm in 1992. In 2000, Steve Baldwin and Pete Keane took over and ran the company together until 2007 when Steve left to pursue other interests in Bishop, California. Pete Keane ran the company independently until 2015, when he partnered with Cliff Agocs. The two now co-own and operate TMG, SRCS and OSG from Bend, Oregon.
Oregon Ski Guides is a division of Timberline Mountain Guides started in 2010, which focus on backcountry ski trips, avalanche education and guided ski descents of Oregon and Washington peaks.
Our Guides
The quality of the instruction we offer, and the strength of our organization rests on our top-notch staff of guides. They are friendly instructors and talented climbers who all share a common passion for sharing mountain experiences with enthusiastic guests. Our guide service is an officially accredited program of the American Mountain Guides Association, and all of TMG's guides have received professional training through the American Mountain Guides Association and wilderness-based medical training. We are dedicated to professional training and to raising the bar for mountain guiding standards in America.
