What Makes Hokkaido Powder So Special?
Hokkaido’s legendary “Japow” forms when Siberian cold fronts collide with moisture-rich air from the Sea of Japan, producing some of the lightest, driest snow on Earth. The island’s unique geography funnels storms directly into its mountains, creating reliable snowfall all winter long. Wide birch forests offer shelter on storm days, while volcanic summits give way to long, flowing descents when the skies clear. It’s this unbeatable combination—constant storms, cold temperatures, and playful terrain—that makes Hokkaido one of the world’s premier powder skiing destinations.
Trip Overview & Ski Touring Expectations
This trip is ideal for strong skiers who love deep snow, moderate climbs, and rewarding descents. Most days include:
- 3,000+ feet of vertical gain
- 4–6 miles of ski touring
- Terrain ranging from low-angle birch forests to broad alpine bowls and volcanic flanks
While we may use the occasional lift for access, the majority of the week is human-powered ski touring. Expect multiple powder laps each day, mellow skin tracks, and thoughtful pacing that keeps the group together. If you’ve been dreaming of big days in deep snow, Hokkaido is the perfect place to build your touring mileage while skiing some of the best powder on the planet.
Lodging, Onsens & Japanese Cuisine
We stay in comfortable, cultural accommodations chosen for proximity to trailheads and easy access to onsens. Evenings often include soaking in natural hot springs, a beloved part of Japanese mountain culture that helps you unwind and reset after big ski days. Dinners spotlight traditional Japanese cuisine, including regional specialties and fresh local ingredients. Between the skiing, the onsens, and the hospitality, this trip blends powder touring with an immersive cultural experience.

Pre-Trip Arrival in Hokkaido
We recommend arriving on the island two days before the trip begins to recover from jet lag and ease into Japan’s winter rhythm.
Day 1 – Meet in New Chitose → Van Ride to Niseko
Meet your guides and team at 1:00 PM in New Chitose, Hokkaido. After a quick gear check, we’ll pack the vans and head to our first hotel in Niseko, one of the most iconic powder regions in Japan. On the way, we’ll make a supermarket stop to gather lunches and snacks for the week. Once checked into the hotel, we’ll enjoy our first group dinner and prepare for the first touring day.
Day 2 – Backcountry Touring Day Niseko
After breakfast, we head straight into the Hokkaido backcountry. Our exact zone depends on conditions, but you can count on:
- Deep powder laps
- Several miles of travel
- ~3,000 feet of vertical gain
If time allows, we’ll close the day with a rejuvenating onsen soak followed by a traditional Japanese dinner together.
Day 3 – Mount Yotei
Weather permitting, today we set our sights on Mt. Yotei, the iconic volcano rising above Niseko. A successful ascent will reward us with a long, aesthetic descent that flows back toward town. Wrap up the day with another well-earned hot spring soak.
Day 4 – Explore New Terrain Around Niseko
Niseko continues to provide. We have so many zones to explore, and today we’ll continue to find the best snow that the weather can provide. We will get an early start and ski until our legs have had enough
Day 5 –Even More Touring around Niseko
With countless trailheads to choose from, we’ll sample a new zone and chase untracked powder. Expect another full day of ski touring, a restorative onsen visit, and a delicious Japanese dinner to cap it off. This can also be a great optional rest day for tired legs.
Day 6 – Shirabetsu
Today we set our sights on another incredible volcano-skiing experience. This is home to some of the deepest powder we’ve found in the Niseko area. This mountain features a variety of terrain and aspects to keep us finding fresh tracks.
Day 7 – Final day of Touring around Niseko
One final day to explore a new zone in Niseko’s famous backcountry. We’ll sample another new zone and we’ll go until we’re good and tire. This will be our last full day of touring, so expect to make the most of it. We’ll spend one last night in Niseko, enjoying an incredible dinner of sushi out on the town, and one last restorative onsen visit.
