ALPINE ROCK CLIMBING

We’ve partnered with Ortovox to offer educational programs designed to teach you the skills to explore the alpine environment independently.

The goal of this alpine rock climbing course is to introduce you to fundamental climbing techniques that you need for successful alpine adventures.

You’ll build on your climbing experience and knowledge from previous courses to ready yourself to tackle rock routes in the mountains. and your climbing experience and teach you everything you need to know to tackle alpine routes: Route finding, advanced belay techniques, placing and cleaning trad gear, and technical descents. You’ll learn strategies, tips and tricks from our seasoned guides.

Skills you’ll learn:

  • Belay techniques for fourth and fifth class
  • Trad gear and anchors
  • Route finding skills
  • Multipitch rope systems
  • Rappelling techniques
  • Alpine climbing etiquette

Day 1 will focus on movement and footwork in 4th and 5th class terrain.  We will practice multipitch climbing systems, and apply them to terrain that ranges from scrambling and ridge-traverses, to ascending steep walls. We will introduce how to build and use solid anchors on rock – and practice belay systems for a variety of anchor types.

Day 2 is your chance to put all of the skills to use, as we attempt to climb to an alpine summit – peaks like Mount Washington and Three Fingered Jack. This day will begin with an alpine start and be a full day of climbing, reinforcing and practicing all the skills that you’ve gained throughout this course, with the support of your guide.

Happy guests on the summit of Mt Hood

"I am very happy with my TMG experience. The guides were professional, personable, and extremely concerned about safety. . . I absolutely give highest marks to these guys. If you don't have much Alpine experience, or just want the security of seasoned veterans guiding you up this mountain, then I strongly recommend you sign up with them. Thanks, guys, for a great experience!!"

"What a fantastic experience gaining the summit of a mountain we've gazed on from Portland for 25 years! . . . We learned a great deal, had a ton of fun, felt in very capable hands, and had the reward of summiting on a beautiful clear day. The value of being with a professional, certified, guide and guiding organization was evident throughout. Kudos to the TMG team who were responsive, supportive, and fun to work with every step of the way."

"We booked 2-day overnight program on Mt. Hood with Timberline Mountain Guides. Our guides were great, . . super friendly and reputable. The program did not go as planned due to inclement weather but we still had fun and good experience. The guides were definitely flexible and provided guidance during the trip. I would recommend going with them if it's your first climbing trip on Mt. Hood for sure."
