MULTIPITCH CLIMBING

We’ve partnered with Ortovox to offer educational programs designed to teach you the skills to explore the climbing environment independently.

This rock climbing course is for those who are comfortable climbing outdoors and want to challenge themselves on more difficult routes and multipitch climbs. During this course you’ll learn the techniques necessary to climb large rock faces. Over the course of two days we’ll teach you the basics of belaying, rappelling, anchoring and lead-climbing, building the foundational skills to climb multipitch routes independently.

Your guide will tailor route selection and skills practice to your level of experience. You’ll walk away much more confident in your climbing ability with more skills to take outside.

Skills you’ll develop:

  • Anchor building
  • Belaying a lead climber
  • Knots and rope-systems for multipitch routes
  • Commands
  • Rappelling on multipitch routes
  • Hazard assessment
  • Reading route topos
  • Climbing etiquette

Day 1:  Learn the basics of solid belaying and movement skills on some classic introductory climbs at Smith Rock. The climbing is on immense walls of volcanic rock in view of the Crooked Rive. Your guide will choose climbs for your ability level and you’ll improve your balance, foot-work, and rope handling, as well as rappelling, all while tackling introductory multipitch routes.

Day 2:  You’ll climb more routes – increasing the difficulty and length of the routes based on your comfort level. This day will include classic routes like Spider Man, Wherever I May Roam, or Voyage of the Cowdog, to name a few.  You will also focus on gear placement, anchor building and lead-belaying skills.

Happy guests on the summit of Mt Hood

"I am very happy with my TMG experience. The guides were professional, personable, and extremely concerned about safety. . . I absolutely give highest marks to these guys. If you don't have much Alpine experience, or just want the security of seasoned veterans guiding you up this mountain, then I strongly recommend you sign up with them. Thanks, guys, for a great experience!!"

"What a fantastic experience gaining the summit of a mountain we've gazed on from Portland for 25 years! . . . We learned a great deal, had a ton of fun, felt in very capable hands, and had the reward of summiting on a beautiful clear day. The value of being with a professional, certified, guide and guiding organization was evident throughout. Kudos to the TMG team who were responsive, supportive, and fun to work with every step of the way."

"We booked 2-day overnight program on Mt. Hood with Timberline Mountain Guides. Our guides were great, . . super friendly and reputable. The program did not go as planned due to inclement weather but we still had fun and good experience. The guides were definitely flexible and provided guidance during the trip. I would recommend going with them if it's your first climbing trip on Mt. Hood for sure."
