Trip Details

Curious about backcountry skiing or splitboarding? Whether you’ve been ducking ropes into the sidecountry, bootpacking local slopes, or dreaming from the chairlift, this one-day program is the perfect way to start exploring the backcountry safely and confidently.

Your First Step Into the Backcountry

This introductory ski touring and splitboarding course focuses on developing the fundamental skills, techniques, and safety habits you’ll need to travel beyond the resort. And of course — we make sure to get plenty of downhill turns throughout the day!

Led by professional guides and avalanche instructors, this program covers:

  • Introduction to backcountry ski and splitboard gear
  • Skinning techniques for efficient uphill travel
  • Avalanche beacon use, rescue tools, and basic safety practices
  • Transition tips to maximize downhill time and efficiency

Who This Program Is For

This course is designed for first-time backcountry skiers and riders who want to gain experience and confidence in a supportive, educational environment. No prior touring experience is required — just strong resort skiing or snowboarding skills and a sense of adventure.

If you’ve never been outside resort boundaries, this is your chance to learn the essentials of backcountry travel with professional guidance.

What to Expect

Your day starts with the basics of avalanche safety — learning how to use your beacon, shovel, and probe effectively. From there, you’ll begin your first uphill tour in Central Oregon’s world-class backcountry terrain.

As you climb, your guide will demonstrate efficient skinning technique, track-setting, and uphill kick turns, helping you refine your movement so you can save energy and enjoy the descent. Each section of the day builds toward getting you comfortable, capable, and confident traveling in the backcountry.

And when it’s time to drop in? We’ll make the most of every lap with plenty of vertical and fresh snow.

Join Us This Winter

We run this intro to backcountry skiing and splitboarding course all winter long in Central Oregon, surrounded by the incredible terrain of the Cascade Mountains.

If you’ve been wanting to learn how to tour, manage avalanche gear, and earn your turns safely — this is the perfect first step.

Happy guests on the summit of Mt Hood

"I am very happy with my TMG experience. The guides were professional, personable, and extremely concerned about safety. . . I absolutely give highest marks to these guys. If you don't have much Alpine experience, or just want the security of seasoned veterans guiding you up this mountain, then I strongly recommend you sign up with them. Thanks, guys, for a great experience!!"

"What a fantastic experience gaining the summit of a mountain we've gazed on from Portland for 25 years! . . . We learned a great deal, had a ton of fun, felt in very capable hands, and had the reward of summiting on a beautiful clear day. The value of being with a professional, certified, guide and guiding organization was evident throughout. Kudos to the TMG team who were responsive, supportive, and fun to work with every step of the way."

"We booked 2-day overnight program on Mt. Hood with Timberline Mountain Guides. Our guides were great, . . super friendly and reputable. The program did not go as planned due to inclement weather but we still had fun and good experience. The guides were definitely flexible and provided guidance during the trip. I would recommend going with them if it's your first climbing trip on Mt. Hood for sure."

Know Before You Go

No prior backcountry skiing/riding experience is required. We can teach you all the skills you’ll need: skinning, transitioning and group communication.

Prior downhill skiing experience is a must. Off-piste experience is recommended. Untracked snow is one of the great joys of the backcountry – but skiing ungroomed terrain requires technique and experience. Consider getting off the groomed trails, or taking a lesson at your local resort before exploring backcountry skiing and riding.
