We’ve partnered with Ortovox to offer educational programs designed to teach you the skills to explore the alpine environment independently.

The goal of this course is to introduce you to fundamental climbing techniques that you need for successful alpine adventures. We begin with assessment of alpine terrain and hazards, and selection and use of your equipment. You will learn rope systems and management for the different types of challenges you will encounter in the alpine environment.

On day 1 we will practice footwork and movement on snow and ice. Then we will practice using crampons and ice axe to help us ascend and descend steep slopes with increased security. Finally, we will learn and practice knots and two types of rope systems that will be critical for traveling in steep and exposed terrain.

Day 2 will focus on glacier travel skills. We will practice a variety of roped travel techniques on basic glaciated terrain. We will also learn and practice building solid anchors in snow and ice. We will do a deep dive into belay systems for steep climbing. On this day you’ll get lots of practice traveling in glaciated terrain and anchoring and belaying your team.

Day 3 will be spent practicing crevasse rescue skills. We will further develop your anchor building skills, and learn how to haul a team member out of a crevasse in the event of a fall. This day will involve lots of rope-work and develop your ability to manage complicated rope systems.

On the 4th day we will put all of the skills together as we attempt to climb a nearby peak . . . either Mount Hood or Mount Baker, depending on the season. This day will begin with an alpine start and be a full day of climbing, reinforcing and practicing all the skills that you’ve gained throughout this course, with the oversight of a guide.

"I am very happy with my TMG experience. The guides were professional, personable, and extremely concerned about safety. . . I absolutely give highest marks to these guys. If you don't have much Alpine experience, or just want the security of seasoned veterans guiding you up this mountain, then I strongly recommend you sign up with them. Thanks, guys, for a great experience!!"

"What a fantastic experience gaining the summit of a mountain we've gazed on from Portland for 25 years! . . . We learned a great deal, had a ton of fun, felt in very capable hands, and had the reward of summiting on a beautiful clear day. The value of being with a professional, certified, guide and guiding organization was evident throughout. Kudos to the TMG team who were responsive, supportive, and fun to work with every step of the way."

"We booked 2-day overnight program on Mt. Hood with Timberline Mountain Guides. Our guides were great, . . super friendly and reputable. The program did not go as planned due to inclement weather but we still had fun and good experience. The guides were definitely flexible and provided guidance during the trip. I would recommend going with them if it's your first climbing trip on Mt. Hood for sure."
