Sandy Headwall

Sandy Headwall

The prominent west face of Mount Hood is dominated by the the seldom climbed Sandy Headwall.  This is a very strenuous climb covering lots of ground and ascends the steep west face of the mountain.  The climb can be done in a big day with the use of a snow cat start.  The snow cat will take us to the 8,500′ level on the mountain where we will begin traversing towards Illumination Saddle.  Climbers will cross the Reid Glacier and then climb over the lower part of Yocum Ridge, to gain access to the upper part of the Sandy Glacier. Steep snow and alpine ice greet the climber as we begin climbing up the Sandy Headwall.  We’ll climb several pitches as we head toward the Queens Chair and eventually the summit.  We will descend back down one of the south side routes and back to Timberline Lodge.
