About the Silcox Hut
The centerpiece of Silcox Hut is a large room featuring a fireplace, hand-carved wooden tables and chairs and windows looking up the mountain, and a bar area. This room is our main lecture and discussion area. It also serves as our dining room.
The lower level of Silcox has three restrooms – one with showers – and six rooms with sleeping quarters. Five of the rooms have two stacked single bunks (for a total of four beds each). The sixth room has only two beds. The rooms are all adjacent and have three walls with privacy curtains.
Excellent food is prepared by the year-round hut-keeper and is served family-style. A typical dinner entree is vegetarian or meat lasagna, green salad, vegetables, rolls and butter, fruit, coffee, tea and dessert. Breakfast includes old-fashioned oatmeal, fruit, juice, muffins and pastries, and coffee or tea. This is real mountain-living with an emphasis on delicious food!
Day 1: We’ll meet at Timberline Lodge and go over gear and logistics before heading up to the Silcox Hut. We’ll spend much of the day in steep snow climbing class. You’ll receive instruction from your guide and practice your new skills. That afternoon and evening we’ll enjoy the amenities of the hut and the beautiful setting of 7000 feet on Mount Hood – overlooking all of Oregon.
Day 2: We’ll be roused by the smell of coffee and pastry, around midnight. We’ll make our best effort to reach the summit, planning to summit around sunrise, then descending back to the hut on foot. Once back we’ll have transportation waiting to take us back down the Timberline Lodge.
This is a limited edition program that is going to change the way you think about suffering in the mountains!
