Alaska

10 Days on the Ruth Glacier

The mountains of the Alaska Range hold some of the highest quality and most sought after climbing in the world. TMG's trip takes you to this awesome arena, into an area called the Ruth Gorge. Our main objective will be the Japanese Couloir on Mt. Barrille (7,650'), a 2,000 ft. route of 35-50 degree snow/ice. After Barrille, other climbing objectives include Mt. Dickey (9,545'), Explorer's Peak (8,540'), or several other unnamed peaks in the area. All of these peaks offer excellent alpine climbing in an incredible environment.

In the small town of Talkeetna we will catch our ski-plane flight into the range and onto the Ruth Glacier. We land in an area known as "The Don Sheldon Amphitheater" and will base all our climbs out of there as well. The first day covers a skills review that will cover roped glacier travel and crevasse rescue. As we move around, we will also be discussing route finding, as well as evaluating conditions and route selection .We will likely move camp at least once during the trip, depending on our route choices.

The climbing will encompass all of the facets that have made Alaskan climbing famous: heavily glaciated terrain, steep snow and ice, mushroom corniced ridges and incredible vertical relief. Against a backdrop of famous peaks such as Denali , Foraker, Hunter, Huntington and the Moose's Tooth this is an amazing place to hone your alpine climbing skills.

Our flexible Alaska program has 10 complete days in the mountains. The length of the program ensures that everyone gets to brush up skills and learn new ones, properly acclimatize and gives us the best chance to optimize our climbing time. We provide top quality meals, care and personalized climbing instruction.
