Pete Backcountry Skiing

Pete Keane

Pete is Director of Timberline Mountain Guides, Inc. He has been climbing since 1982 and guiding since 1989. Pete has made 5 expeditions to Alaska, including a successful ascent of the Cassin Ridge on Denali (6,194 meters), Ham and Eggs on the Moose's Tooth and the Southwest Ridge of Peak 11,300. He also attempted the Bonnington Route on the South Face of Annapurna I (8,091 meters), and has climbed Khan Tengri (6,995 meters) and attempted Pik Pobeda (7,439 meters), both in Kyrgyzstan. Pete also enjoys rock climbing in the desert and backcountry skiing. In the off season Pete tries to spend as much time as possible with his sons, Finn and Calvin. Pete is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock and Alpine Guide, has completed his Level III Avalanche Course, has served on the AMGA Board of Directors, and has recently completed an AMGA Ski Guides Course. Pete currently guides rock climbing, skiing and mountaineering.

Steve Rock Climbing at Smith Rock State Park

Steve Baldwin

Steve has been guiding since 1995 and climbing since 1985. Steve has climbed extensively in the western U.S. doing alpine snow and ice, big walls and long alpine rock routes. In the off season, Steve enjoys skiing powder, desert rock climbing and is an avid photographer, www.stevebaldwinphotography.com. Steve guides both mountaineering and rock climbing programs. Steve has completed his Level I Avalanche Course, the AMGA Advanced Rock Guides Course and is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Instructor.

Nick Backcountry Skiing

Nick Pope

Nick began climbing in 1986 and started guiding in 2003. Enjoying a wide spectrum of climbing and skiing, his travels have taken him from skiing in Switzerland to the big walls of Yosemite, from Canadian Rockies ice to Sierra Nevada alpine snow and rock, as well as many places in between. Now living in Portland, Oregon, Nick likes to climb and ski the mountains of Oregon. Washington and Canada. He is an active volunteer with Portland Mountain Rescue and is a Wilderness First Responder. Nick is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Guide, Certified Alpine Guide and has completed his Ski Guides Course as well as his Level III Avalanche Course. He is currently working towards full AMGA/IFMGA certification.

Joe Climbing Mt. Hood

Joe Owens

Joe has been climbing since 1991 and guiding and instructing since 1993. He has climbed all over the Northwest with multiple ascents of Mt. Rainier, Forbidden Peak, and Liberty Bell. Joe has also climbed in Alaska, the Sierra, Canadian Rockies, Ecuador and the infamous Ben Nevis in Scotland. Originally from Ireland, Joe came to the US for the free form lifestyle and climbing opportunities. He is an active volunteer for Portland Mountain Rescue. In the off season, Joe continues to climb and travel around the world. He has completed the American Mountain Guides Association Rock Instructor Course, Alpine Guides Course and the Advanced Alpine Guides Course and has completed the Level III Avalanche Course. Joe currently guides rock climbing, mountaineering and winter programs.

Ben Climbing Mt. Hood

Ben Randall

Ben has climbed extensively across the North American continent. From the steep walls of Eldorado Canyon to the big walls of El Portrero Chico in Mexico . Mountain ascents include a one day winter ascent of Kieners on Longs Peak, to multiple accents of Mt. Rainier , to hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro . Ben has completed the AMGA Rock Instructor Course and Alpine Guides Course, and is working towards full UIAGM/IFMGA certification. Ben has also completed a Level I Avalanche Course. In the off season Ben enjoys backcountry skiing and climbing in the Colorado Rockies as well as desert cragging in Utah . Ben has been guiding for TMG since the spring of 2005 and guides both rock and alpine climbing.

Phil Climbing Mt. Hood

Phil Bowker

Phil was born in Belfast, N. Ireland and started his climbing career on the gritstone crags of the Peak District when he moved to Sheffield, England in 1988. Phil then moved to Chamonix, France where he lived for many years making the Alps his ‘back door’ playground. He has also traveled to Pakistan making the first ascent of Khoz Sar (6,100 meters) and Western China to attempt Kuksulak (7,500 meters). Other climbing destinations include Australia, Mexico, Thailand, and South America. Phil came to America in 2002 to climb in Yosemite and began working for Timberline Mountain Guides in 2006. He is an American Mountain Guides Association Top Rope Site Manager and has completed his Rock Instructor Course and Alpine Guides Course as well as his Level II Avalanche Course. During the winter Phil works as a Professional Ski Patroller on Mt. Bachelor and holds an EMT-B certification.

 

 

 

 

Matt Rock Climbing at Smith Rock State Park

Matt Cline

Matt has been climbing since 1998 and leading outdoor trips since 1997. He has climbed all over North America from the Harding Ice Field in Alaska to the desert climate of Joshua Tree, CA. Matt worked as a Lead Mountain Instructor for Outward Bound in Alaska, the North Cascades, California and the Central Cascades of Oregon. He has completed the Level II Avalanche Course as well as the AMGA Alpine Guides Course, has his EMT certification and is a member of Portland Mountain Rescue. In the winter months Matt is a ski patroller at Timberline Ski Area on Mt. Hood where he was the 2005 "Patroller of the Year".

 

 

 

 

 

Geoff Climbing Mt. Hood

Geoff Lodge

A native or Oregon, Geoff has been climbing since 1997 and guiding since 2005. Apart from successfully summiting all of the Cascade volcanoes from California to British Columbia, he has done most of them multiple times and most by various routes. When not in the Northwest working difficult alpine routes, you will find him in the Sierra, Tetons, North Cascades, Bugaboos, and the Rockies climbing. Geoff successfully summited both Liberty Ridge on Rainier and Casaval Ridge on Shasta in a total of four days, both separated by 500 miles and two state lines, on a friends dare in a pub! His friend now owes him beer the rest of his life. When not guiding, Geoff enjoys backcountry skiing, climbing with his dog Kaya, and is a staff member of the Iceaxemen, a high school program that educates students in climbing, backcountry skills, and leadership in the Northwest. Geoff is an accredited member of the American Mountain Guides Association and has completed his Rock Instructor and Alpine Guides courses looking to one day be a fully certified IFMGA guide. He also holds his Avalanche Level II Certificate and is a Wilderness First Responder. Geoff guides both rock climbing and mountaineering.

Ian Climbing in Alaska

Ian Boyer

Ian has been climbing since 1993 and guiding since 1998. His career has taken him around the world including 10 expeditions to Ecuador and Peru, 2 major trips to Asia, and climbing extensively throughout the Lower 48. In 2002, he and one other partner made an alpine style attempt on the South Ridge of Pumo Ri (7,165 meters), Nepal, stopping just 250 feet short of the summit. Other highlights include ascents of Ranrapalca’s North Face (6,162 meters) and the Original Route V 5.11 on La Esphinge (5,300 meters) in Peru, a 6-day ascent of the Shield and 12-hour ascent of the West Face, both on El Capitan in Yosemite, and numerous hard mixed first ascents in the Adirondacks of New York. He lives with his wife, in Portland and spends some of his free time skiing (or in Ian’s case, tumbling downhill with skis attached!). Ian has completed the American Mountain Guides Association Advanced Rock Guides Course, is a Wilderness First Responder and has completed his Level I Avalanche Course.

Jon Climbing in the Central Oregon Cascades

Jon Bates

Jon started climbing with scrambling up his backyard peaks of Glacier National Park in his home state of Montana. He started climbing seriously in 1999 on the ice of the Canadian and Montanan Rockies. Jon has been guiding for TMG since 2006. He has climbed in Montana, Canada, all of the major Oregon Cascade peaks, the North Cascades of Washington including Mt. Rainier and Mt. Stuart, and the desert crags of Utah to the towering walls of Yosemite.  Jon spends his winters in Cody WY sampling some of the finest ice climbs in the Rockies. He has completed the AMGA Rock Instructor Course, he has his AIARE Level 2 Certification and his Wilderness First Responder Certification. He plans to further his AMGA training and certifications. Jon guides both rock and alpine climbing. In his spare time he enjoys fly fishing and spending time with his Fiance Heather and his two dogs.

 

 

 

 

Smith Rock Climbing School Guide, Chris Wright

Chris Wright

Chris was born in Cambridge, England, but grew up skiing and playing in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He learned to climb on the famed cliffs of New York's Gunks and has been hooked ever since. Chris explored the crags, boulders and ice-falls of the eastern seaboard before moving to Bend in 2005. The pursuit of climbing and skiing has taken him across the states and to New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Morocco, Asia, Mexico and Canada. Since moving to Oregon, Chris has made ascents of many western peaks from Alaska's Mt. Huntington to Wyoming's Wind River Range, and Yosemite's El Capitan and Half Dome to the Northwest's own Cascades, as well as establishing first ascents at home in central Oregon. Chris has completed the  American Mountain Guides Association's Rock, Alpine and Ski Guide courses, as well as AIARE Level III avalanche training. He is an AIARE certified Level I Avalanche Instructor and a Wilderness First Responder, and holds a BFA from New York University. Chris has guided in Alaska with the Alaska Mountaineering School and has been with Timberline Mountain Guides since 2006. He currently guides rock and alpine climbing, teaches avalanche courses, and together with Joe Owens successfully guided our 2009 Orizaba expedition.

David SaigetDavid Climbng Mt. Hood

David has been climbing since 1974 and guiding since 1979. He has climbed and traveled all over the world with many trips to Southeast Asia. He has a working knowledge of Nepali and Thai languages. Some highlights of David's career include getting to 7,900 meters on Cho Oyu (8,201 meters) and having to rescue a teammate that was stricken with cerebral edema and an epic 63 day expedition to Alaska where the team skied in to Denali (6,194 meters) from Talkeetna and successfully climbed to the summit. David has also climbed the elusive North Face of Mt. Robson in the Canadian Rockies and El Capitan in Yosemite . When not guiding,  David works as a Fisheries Biologist for the US Forest Service. In addition, David is also the father of two boys, Matthew and Jonathan, and his daughter Morgan, who are regularly hauled-out on their own ‘epic’ mountain trips with their father. David guides mountaineering and rock climbing.

Carlos Cummings

Carlos is a graduate from Oregon State University’s Outdoor Recreation and Leadership Program and has completed the Wilderness First Responder Certification as well as the AIARE Level II Avalanche Certification. He began his career with Timberline Mountain Guides as an intern in 2005 and is now the Office Manager. Carlos has immersed himself in the backcounty for years. He has backpacked and climbed in the Adirondacks, the Oregon and Washington Cascades, as well as an international mountaineering trip to Mexico. He is planning to travel back to Mexico to complete his goal of summiting both El Pico de Orizaba and Volcano Ixtaccihuatl soon. He has climbed Mt. Hood several times by different routes as well as many of the Pacific Northwest volcanoes. He is an avid snowboarder and ventures into the backcountry for turns as often as he can. Carlos enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Janice, and dog, Willie. He also enjoys mountain biking and surfing during his spare time.

 

 

 

John MacKinnonJohn Backcountry Skiing in the Central Oregon Cascades

John works year round as a mountain guide and splits his time between Oregon and Colorado. He instructs rock and alpine climbing trips in Oregon for Timberline Mountain Guides in the Spring and Summertime. He spends his winters based in Crested Butte, Colorado where he guides backcountry skiing and teaches AIARE avalanche courses. John's climbing and skiing adventures have taken him throughout the Lower 48, Canada, Scotland, and France. When not guiding, John can usually be found riding his mountain bike around Colorado or climbing in the Utah desert.

John is an Individual Member of the AMGA and has succesfully completed the Top-Rope Site Manager Course, the Rock Instructor Course, and the Ski Guides Course. He is also an AIARE Level I Instructor, AIARE Avalanche Level III certified and a Wilderness First Responder.

Smith Rock Climbing School Guide, Rodney Sofich

Rodney Sofich

Rodney is an Oregon native.  This will be Rodney's second year with Timberline Mountain Guides.  He joined our team last season with diverse outdoor experience.  He has been guiding on Pacific Northwest volcanoes for the past six years.  Within that time period he found time to be a seasonal Wilderness and Climbing Ranger for the
Mt. Hood National Forest.  When Rodney is not guiding he is either working for Reed College teaching outdoor leadership skills, co-instructing avalanche courses with Mountain Savvy, filling in hours at a locally owned outdoor shop, and teaching cross country skiing with a local city program.  Rodney has a Masters degree from Portland State University in Public Administration of Natural Resources, an AIARE Avalanche II Certification and is pursuing professional development with the AMGA, having completed the Single Pitch Instructors Course in 2007 and the Rock Instructors Course in 2008.

Mike Rougeux

Mike began exploring the outdoors in the Adirondacks of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont.  His passion for rock climbing was fueled by his first climbing experience at the historic cliffs of the Shawangunks in NY.  Since being bit by the climbing bug Mike has climbed extensively throughout New England and North America.  Some of his favorite places to climb from his journeys have been; Yosemite, Rumney, Seneca Rocks, Smugglers’ Notch, Thailand, and Laos, and now calls Smith Rock his home crag.  If he’s not climbing Mike enjoys searching for untracked powder on his snowboard and perfecting his tele turn.  Mike graduated from Johnson State College in VT with a degree in Adventure Education and Wilderness Leadership.  He has completed the AMGA Top Rope Site Manager Course, has his Level I Avalanche Certification, is a certified USA Climbing Coach, and a Wilderness First Responder.

Gabriel Coler 

Gabriel Coler began climbing in the Berkshires of western Massachussetts in his early years, eventually making rock and ice ascents all over New England. After moving west for college, he cut his teeth in most of the major western climbing areas including:  alpine ascents throughout the Cascades, test-piece alpine climbs in the Canadian Rockies and French Alps, and most recently a free-ascent of Half-Dome’s Regular Northwest Face.  He has been guiding in Central Oregon for the last five years, and is an AMGA Certified Rock Guide.  Gabe inspires those around him through his teaching style, personality and his humble attitude towards climbing.

Tico Allulee

Tico is a native of upstate New York, and started learning to climb in the Gunks in the mid-90's.  Since then, he's visited all 50 states and climbed rock in 40 of them, and is still learning the subtleties and tactics in the art of climbing.  Highlights of his career include helping to lead the first disabled Nose-in-a-day, spending way to much time in the desert, and shredding the champagne powder of his current home in Utah.  Tico has a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, is a WFR, has completed an AIARE Level 2 course, and is an AMGA Certified Rock Guide.


 

 

 

 

 

  

 

Todd Glew

Todd Glew began climbing in Massachusetts and began to ski and scale the peaks of New England in high school.  His passion for skiing and climbing drove him to Alta Utah shortly after high school.  He has spent 8 years in the Western United States skiing and climbing.  In 2008 he competed in the Ski Mountaineering World Championships as a member of the United States Ski Mountaineering Team.  He received a degree in experiential education from the University of Utah in 2008.  Todd has guided skiing, climbing, and canyoneering for at-risk high school boys.  He currently works as a ski guide for Utah Mountain Adventures and as an avalanche observer during the winter.  Todd has an Avalanche II certification and a Wilderness First Responder Certification.

 

Marc Ripperger

A Native to the plains of Iowa, marc relocated to the West in order to pursue his outdoor passions.  Marc has guided from the towers of the desert southwest to the peaks of South America.  His love for rock, ice an mountain climbing has takenhim to the big walls of Yosemite, Rocky Mountains, High Sierras, North Cascades, Rut Gorge Alaska, Cordillera Blanca Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador.  Marc is passionate about instructing and educating  climbers on all levels.  When not climbing Marc spends time with his wife and tries to utilize his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and enjoying the sunshine of home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Marc currently is pursuing his AMGA Rock and Alpine Guide certification and holds an AMGA single pitch instructor and aspirant rock guide certification.

 

 

Sheldon Kerr

Sheldon is an AMGA trained ski guide with six years under her belt leading climbing, backcountry touring and ski mountaineering trips in Alaska and the Rocky Mountain West.  Her expedition guiding includes high-altitude peaks in Argentina, Tanzania and Alaska as well as teaching 24-day ski-mountaineering and mountaineering courses.  Winter finds her in Colorado's San Juans throwing avalanche-control bombs, lapping climbs in the Ouray Ice Park and searching for skis in thigh-deep powder (often to no avail). She teaches Level 1 and 2 courses for AIARE (American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education) and is a competitive extreme skier (don't tell her parents). She subscribes to Gourmet, New Yorker and Alpinist magazines and hopes to someday own a SportsMobile.

 

 

 

 

Cliff Agocs

Cliff has been climbing since 2002. He began learning rock and alpine climbing in Lake Tahoe, CA and then made Yosemite his home crag. Since then he has climbed in the Sierra Nevada regularly, and made trips to destinations ranging from the Tetons to Joshua Tree to Nepal. He has guided in California and Mexico, but most recently the climbing bug has drawn him to the alpine routes of the Pacific Northwest. He has completed the AMGA Rock Instructor Course and Level I avalanche certification through AIARE, and is trained as a Wilderness First Responder. He guides rock climbing and mountaineering.
